Welcome Back

Posted on 8th January 2008

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! I hope that your Christmas was filled with love and family. The teachers, staff, and I want to thank all of you for your generosity to us at Christmas. Besides the gifts, you delighted us daily with cookies, candies, doughnuts, bagels, cakes, fruit, and oodles of treats! And as difficult as it was, we managed to consume them all!!

Principal’s Corner Update

Posted on 29th October 2007

Dear Parents,
We have been very busy these last few weeks with studies and taking tests as we prepare to issue our first report cards for this school year. By now you have all received your appointments for your teacher conferences on Tuesday, November 6. The Book Fair will be open that day in the Art Room to officially launch your Christmas shopping!

Our school children have been very busy visiting the Revolutionary War encampment, collecting sea life on the Sound, visiting the pumpkin patch, experiencing high school, and hosting a Luncheon for the Senior Citizens of the parish. We have been practicing our fire safety routines and even our two year olds know what the fire bell means.

Principal’s Corner Update

Posted on 11th October 2007

We have been very busy about launching the school year. You have received your children’s Progress Reports and have already settled in to the Back to School routines. Classes are progressing nicely and as long as the weather holds out we will remain in our summer uniforms for a while longer! Some members of the Knights of Columbus group, under the leadership of Dom Romano, will be starting a Chess Club during school time and teaching anyone who is interested in learning the game. And yes, you have been hearing the sounds of Christmas carols around the building! Mr. G is beginning to practice for the Christmas Pageant.

Welcome Back!

Posted on 28th August 2007

Our school looks rejuvenated thanks to the YESS grant we received from the Archdiocese for new ceilings and lights and the fantastic job done by our summer crew under the direction of Paul Mc Gann. The only thing missing is the laughter of our children, but next week they will be back!

We have been busy this summer not only with construction but also with the hiring of new staff members.

We are in the process of updating our computer lab thanks to the generosity of the IBM families and alumni of the parish. As an aside, if you know any IBM-ers that might like to help, we get five times their donation in equipment. I even ‘asked’ my Dad!!

Enjoy what is left of the summer vacation and see you in September! On the 5th to be precise!

As We Start Wrapping Up The Year

Posted on 30th May 2007

Dear Parents,

May has been a very busy month at school. We celebrated the First Communion of our Second graders. The weather was perfect and the students were so enthusiastic to receive the Body of Christ for the first time. The following Monday, our Eighth Grade Confirmation Class and the Second Graders led the entire school in a long established tradition at St. Lawrence. The May Crowning was held to honor the Blessed Mother for Her role as our Mother and Intercessor with Her Son, Jesus. Both classes wore their sacrament attire. The May Crowning was attended by many parishioners and school families.

The very same week, our Home School Association hosted a luncheon to thank our teachers and staff for their dedication to the students of St. Lawrence School. I want to thank all the volunteers that manned the classrooms, the cafeteria, and play yard and all of you parents for the gift certificates and delicious luncheon. The week closed with our annual school wide celebration. This year the celebration centered on Colonial Life. The students had a great time dressing in colonial garb and sharing in the craft activities. The Brewster Museum delighted all of us with a presentation on Colonial life and toys.

School Happenings

Posted on 16th April 2007

I hope that you had a wonderful Easter recess. The children came back last week rested and ready to accomplish the few remaining months of school.

March was filled with snow days and testing. The students in all grades took ITBS and in Grades 4 and 8 the New York State Exams. Our Eighth Graders attended an evening of Reflection, sat for their written final exam and their oral interview for Confirmation. I am pleased to report that they all performed very well. On this Friday, April 20 Bishop Dominic Lagonegro will confirm them. What an exciting and proud day for them, their parents and family, and all of us in their school family.

I also want to congratulate the Eighth graders on their acceptance and registration in the high schools of their choice. Many of our students received scholarships for high school based on their academic achievements. I am proud of them, their teachers, and their families who collaborated to ensure this success.

Take a look at us!

Posted on 27th February 2007

Welcome to one of the busiest times of the year!

Our students returned to school in January all set to experience the adventures of Midterm exams, State Testing for Grades 4 and 8 in Language Arts, and Report Cards. The wall outside the Main Office proudly displays the names of those students who earned academic honors in recognition of their efforts.

With exams behind them, the students embarked on the new term, Open House, and a nationwide celebration of Catholic Schools. Our Open House on Sunday, January 28th, brought together a great group of people. Parents from our school spoke at every Mass and encouraged members of the parish to come and join our school community. Their heartfelt testimony resounded throughout the parish. Our student ambassadors, dressed in their uniforms, proudly guided visitors around their school and answered questions. The Marketing Committee members, our Home School Board, and parent volunteers welcomed visitors to our school. Our pastor, the entire Faculty and our Administrative Staff met and greeted prospective parents and students. Visitors commented on the warmth and congeniality which awaited them at our doors! I am deeply grateful to all of you for a job well done!

A Christmas Message

Posted on 21st December 2006

Merry Christmas!!

The past three weeks at St. Lawrence School have been filled with preparation for the celebration of the birth of the Baby Jesus. Advent wreaths, attending the sacrament of Reconciliation, the story of the Jesse Tree and practice for the Christmas Pageant have all helped the children prepare their hearts for this joyous season.

Nothing touches the heart and spirit of the Christian world more than the glorious story of the journey to Bethlehem. Families re-tell the story of the hardships experienced by the Holy Family as they awaited the birth of the baby destined to be the Savior. The Heralding angels and a brilliant star in the night sky, that inspired the arrival of Shepherds and Kings from the Orient, still capture the imagination of children and adults alike.

I might be slightly subjective but to see and hear the entire student body share their talents in our re-telling of the Christmas story was the best gift ever.

May your heart be filled with the peace and joy of that Holy Night. May you all be blessed with the joy that filled our Church as the children sang “…Praise that wonderful name of Jesus…”

May you and your family be blessed with love and happiness this year and for many years to come,

Mrs. Sharyn O’ Leary
Principal

Exciting Happenings in Our School

Posted on 16th November 2006

Dear Parents,

What a whirlwind the past three weeks have been!

Our school launched its 80th Birthday celebration two weekends ago with a Gala Dinner and Open House. Both events were very well attended. The stories and memories were exciting and it was fun to hear about days gone by. The Sisters of the Divine Compassion enriched the evening by their presence and by their shared memories of a time long ago.

Principal’s Corner Update

Posted on 25th October 2006

Dear Parents,

The past few weeks have just flown by. The children have been working hard mastering all manner of new skills, vocabulary words, mathematical and scientific principles and calculations, not to mention a new twist on learning a foreign language through total language immersion and computer technology. In their spare time, they managed to stock our Atrium with seeds and plants and launch the beginnings of a wonderful green space in our school. They also celebrated the gift of life through a prayer service sponsored by the Second and Seventh grade classes and dressed in Denim to raise $273 for Cancer research. Our Eighth Graders invited the Senior Citizens of the parish to Lunch in honor of Respect Life month.
