This Year's Ghana Collection - 2008: New Chapel Building for Kantro Assumption Catholic Church

Once again we wish to thank you for your spiritual, moral and material support towards the growth of the Church in Ghana, especially in the Diocese of Sunyani. Through your help we have been able to complete some chapels to provide suitable places of worship. This year we are proposing the construction of a small chapel at a Village called Kantro.

Kantro Village is an outstation of the parish I am administering in addition to the numerous administrative works as the Vicar General of the Diocese. I really enjoy serving the faithful in this new parish. When I took over at the beginning of the year some migrant farmers in the surrounding villages used to walk between eight to twelve miles to attend Mass at the main parish center — Fiapre. They were unable to get transport for the long distance since vehicles hardly use the narrow roads and footpaths in the area. I therefore decided to travel every Sunday to Kantro Village for Mass. During such weekly visits the Catholics in the surrounding villages gather at Kantro (the Central Village) for the Eucharistic Celebration. In less than a year the Catholic Community at Kantro has grown from one family of six to 203 people.

At the moment we have our worship and Eucharistic celebrations under the shade of trees. Whenever there is rainfall, we simply pack the benches and tables and seek shelter in the small village huts. We remain there until the rain stops before we gather again to continue the celebration. To avoid the hot tropical heat during the day, we always start the Mass at 6.00 a.m. This enables us to finish the celebration before the sun reaches a high temperature. In spite of these challenges many people in the surrounding villages walk from afar to worship at Kantro with enthusiasm.

The Traditional Chief of Kantro and his elders have been very sympathetic and generous towards the Small Catholic Community at Kantro, and offered an acre piece of land for the construction of a Chapel. Through communal labor the Kantro Catholic Community with the assistance of their neighbors are making blocks for a new chapel. They need financial support for cement, timber and roofing sheets to build a suitable place for worship. Your donation and prayerful support will enable us to implement this chapel project successfully for the glory of God and the redemption of the People of God.

May God Richly Bless You.
